The Kebbi government, in collaboration with the World Bank and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has commenced training of 1,452 primary school teachers in Hausa language teaching methodologies.
Hajiya Rafaatu Hammani, Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, disclosed this on Wednesday, in Birnin Kebbi.
Hammani said that the five-day training, under the Better Service Delivery for All (BESDA), was to ensure that out-of-school children got basic education.
“The programme, apart from training the teachers to teach in local Hausa language, will also ensure that out-of-school children, including the Almajiris, are included to get the basic education.
“The programme is aimed at bringing back to school out-of-school children such as the Almajiris, the nomads’ children and fishermen, whether they are in formal or non-formal setting.
“The important thing is for all categories of children to know how to read and write at early stage and it has been proven that using local language, Hausa, is the best,’’ she said.
According to her, training of master trainers, coaches and mentors are carried out to ensure strict supervision of the exercise in schools across the state.
Hammani commended Gov. Atiku Bagudu for his passion for the programme and his directives for involving relevant stakeholders for the success of the five-day programme in the state.
Earlier, the Desk Officer for BESDA, Malam Hassan Umar, said that the programme would help to improve the confidence and teaching skills of the teachers.
“This will translate into better learning outcomes. The programme has been tested elsewhere; we hope that it will work in Kebbi,’’ he said.
