Some Iyana Oba market leaders in Lagos say they will continue to ensure clean environment through the weekly market environmental sanitation to make the market more habitable.
They, however, expressed happiness that the environmental sanitation had greatly improved the market area thereby making it not only more habitable but also free from airborne diseases.
The market leaders, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday during the exercise, also urged the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to help them evacuate the heaps of garbage along the road.
Iyana Oba market is one of the agricultural produce markets in Lagos State known for its filthy and unclean environment.
NAN reports that the exercise, which started at about 8.a.m. during which shops and stalls close for business, ended at 10 a.m.
The Chairman, Iyana Oba Yam Dealers Association, Mr Tajudeen Adekunle said “the renewed vigour which the state is supervising the exercise since commencement of the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu led-administration is yielding good results’’.
“Unlike before, the exercise will go on passively without much being achieved while some open shops during the exercise without fear of being apprehended by officials of LAWMA.
“Today, things have changed with everyone playing his or her role, shops locked, officials patrolling to instil discipline and the result is good outlook of the market that used to be filthy and an eyesore,’’ Adekunle.
Mrs Ngozi Uzo, the Chair Person for Iyanoba Vegetable Circuit, said that the efforts of members in the cleaning programme were commendable and ought to be encouraged for sustenance.
“LAWMA should help to remove the heaps of dirt so that it does not become some sort of decoration in the market.
“If the heaps stay more than necessary, it becomes an eyesore thereby defeating the objective of the exercise with its attendant health hazard and blocking of the highways that will result to gridlock,’’ she said.
The women leader expressed joy over the subsistence clean environment in the market and tasked traders to always comply with the authorities for better development.
Speaking on the exercise, Mr Tobi Demola, a LAWMA official in charge of the area, said that the dilapidated condition of road along the market was delaying removal of refuse from the area. (
