Sen. Ignatius Longjan, representing Plateau South at the National Assembly, has promised to support in rebuilding St.Virgilius Memorial Hospital, Namu, Jos, that was razed by fire recently.
Longjan, who made the pledge during a visit to the hospital on Wednesday, described the inferno as `a serious calamity’ but urged the people to look unto God.
“The purpose of my visit is to sympathise with you over the sad event. It is a very serious calamity because this is where sick people receive treatment,” he said.
The lawmaker urged the people to unite and look for ways of rebuilding the hospital and pledged to support them.
“It is something that we can do collectively by coming together because it affects everybody,” Longjan added.
The Hospital Administrator, Rev. Sister Janet Waziri, told the lawmaker that the incident occurred on Aug. 22 as a result of an electric spark from the solar system in the hospital that connected the battery.
Waziri said that the data room, scanning room, delivery room, out patient department, consultancy room as well as pharmacy department were all affected by the inferno.
She said that the hospital was a busy one that was attending to not less than 30 patients daily.
The Parish Priest of St. Johnbosco Parish, Rev. Rev. Fr. Mathew Chanshilip, thanked Sen. Longjan for identifying with them at this sad moment.
The cleric appealed to other public spirited individuals and groups to rise to the occasion of rebuilding the hospital to save humanity.
The St.Virgilius Memorial Hospital of St. Johnbosco Parish Namu located in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area was destroyed by fire on Aug. 22.
It is the only hospital in the area and the incident had left the people of the area without health facility nearby.
