The Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, has earmarked N8 million for the conduct of a fumigation exercise within Sokoto State metropolis.
The fumigation which was personally sponsored by Wamakko, Senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, was flagged off on Wednesday at Sokoto South Local Government Area of the state.
Earlier, Wamakko, represented by his aide, Dr Bello Abubakar, said that the motive behind the exercise was to help the communities in the state to stem the tide of the malaria menace.
He said that the exercise which would last for the next 30 days was targeting five local government areas in Sokoto metropolis.
The lawmaker said that the local government included: Sokoto South, Sokoto North, Wamakko, Kware and Dange Shuni.
Inaugurating the fumigation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in the area, Alhaji Bello Mainasara, described the gesture as a relief not only to the people of the area but to the state as a whole.
He extolled Wamakko’s efforts for coming up with the exercise, saying it could not have come at a better time than now when the scourge of malaria was endemic.
“The malaria pandemic as very formidable and dangerous and there is the need for collective efforts to tackle the menace,’’ Mainasara said.
Commenting on the exercise, Alhaji Sani Bodinga, the Chairman, Spraying Association of Sokoto State, said that the association was given the responsibility to undertake the exercise in the targeted areas.
He said that the exercise would be conducted daily, adding that a committee had already been set up led by Alhaji Buba Mairago to ensure proper monitoring of the exercise.
