A Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old welder, Monday Adamu, to one year in prison for stealing seven cell phones and recharge cards worth N625,000.
Magistrate Christiana Barau, sentenced Adamu, after he pleaded guilty to joint act, shop breaking and theft.
Adamu begged the court for leniency.
Magistrate Barau ordered the convict to pay N200,000 in damages to the complainant, Isaac Oshomo, who resides in Tunga area of Minna.
Barau also ordered the convict to pay a fine of N20,000.
The police charged Adamu, who resides in Tunga area, Minna with joint act, shop breaking and theft, contrary to sections 79, 353 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Emmanuel Ogiri, told the court that the convict was arrested by the complainant and brought to the police station in Minna on Aug. 20.
Ogiri said that the convict and two others, now at large, broke into the complainant’s shop and stole seven techno cell phones, accessories, including recharge cards, worth N625, 000.
