The ‘new’ Super Eagles demonstrated a zeal to win the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday evening as they beat hard-fighting Banana Banana 2-1.
They defeated Banana Banana in the match that did not feature old-generation players such as Mikel
Wizardly Samuel Chukwueze justified the confidence Coach Gernot Rohr invested in him in the 27th minute when he got the first goal for the Eagles.
Many had queried Rohr’s instinct of not putting Chukwueze in the starting line and he well responded to the opinion in the quarter final match.
Besides scoring, he was fantastic on the ball in most parts of the game, dribbling effectively and crossing in the ball from the outside right he manned.
While Eagles continued to demonstrate fluidity and calmness till the second half, South Africa’s pressure paid off when they scored a goal that was sealed by VAR.
But the Eagles’ final-moments fight-back paid off via a corner kick at the 88th minute, converted by William Troost-Ekon.
