Shola Mese, the Treasurer, Ogunu Golf Resort (OGR), Warri, Delta, has appealed to governments and Nigerians to establish more Golf schools to fast track the development of the game in the country.
Speaking with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Warri, Mese said the gesture would enable the “young golfers’’ to play the game alongside their studies conveniently.
“We are appealing to governments and well-meaning Nigerians to establish Golf academies for the young ones so that they can run it together conveniently with their studies like the Football Academy.
“The young ones can easily forget their studies if they get addicted to golf unlike in the Western world where they have academies for the game.
“We are trying to introduce the young ones in the primary and secondary schools in Warri into the game as a way of catching them young,” he said.
Mese also called for more sponsorship of tournaments to expose the young golfers to the rudiments of the game.
He said the game is improving in the country, noting that Nigeria has produced the likes of Andrew Odoh and others doing very well internationally.
“The future of golf is bright in the country. It has no age limit, between five years and 95 years can play golf unlike other games except the indoor sports.
“Golf is a game that unites people together irrespective of their tribe, religion and political affiliations, it brings everybody together,” he said.
The golf official, who is also the Founder/CEO of Shola Mese Foundation, an NGO, urged people to continue to embrace the sport to improve on their health and fitness.
