A 21-year-old applicant, John Koffi, is to spend the next 48 months in Ikoyi Prisons, Lagos, for stabbing a man with a broken bottle.
Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered that the convict must learn a skill in prison.
Koffi, who broke into a welder’s workshop with the intent to steal, stabbed Mr Nzika Okon, the shop owner.
The Magistrate, Mrs A.M Olumide-Fusika read the sentence;” I hereby sentence the defendant to four years imprisonment.
“The defendant should learn a skill that he so pleases and the prison authorities should keep a close watch on him.
The convict, who resides at Mobil Road, Ilaja Ajah in Lagos, earlier pleaded guilty to a one count charge of assault resulting to grievous harm .
The prosecutor, Insp Ben Ekundayo, earlier told the court that the convict committed the offence on May 20 at 3:00a.m at Thomas Estate, Ajah, Lagos.
He said the convict unlawfully assaulted Mr Nzika Okon by stabbing him on his right hand and chest with broken bottle causing him grievous harm.
Ekundayo said that Okon, a welder, had noticed that some unknown person had been entering his workshop to steal his working tools.
“The complainant stood guard at his workshop overnight and saw Koffi scaling the fence into the workshop to steal his tools.
“When the convict saw Okon he attacked him with a broken bottle and stabbed him repeatedly on his right hand and chest,” he said
The offence contravenes section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
