At the time the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control is making a move to control sales of sniper in the country, another youth may have killed herself by taking the poisonous substance.
Authorities of the University of Benin and police in Edo State have confirmed the death of the 300-level student on the institution, Miss Christabell Omoremime Buoro, said to have committed suicide.
She was a 21-year-old Medical Laboratory student, with her corpse said to have been found on Tuesday evening in her hostel flat located at Plot 4, Yehudi Lane, situated off Newton Street, Ekosodin, a community behind the university.
Acording to reports, Buoro mixed the deadly insecticide with a soft drink, and reportedly left a suicide note where she stated that she was about taking her life because the guy she loved didn’t love her in return.
An empty sachet of detergent was found on the spot where she took her life, just as reports added that people got to know it was suicide from the note she left which the police read out to the crowd that thronged the area.
While policemen at the Ugbowo Police Division were said to have invited two persons for questioning over the content of the letter, UNIBEN spokesman, Michael Osasuyi, said the school was waiting for a detailed briefing concerning what really happened since the incident did not take place within the campus.
No less that 20 Nigerians have committed suicide in recent times, a development that has become a source of worry to many, although government has not really officially spoken about it.
While many of them are youth, a good number of the victims are students of higher institutions.
Among such are the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife; University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Not less than two secondary school students have, however, also reportedly killed themselves in recent times.
