As the controversy generated by the incident of the Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, sitting on a seat said to be allotted to a young man on a plane rages, I remember the poetry video I produced in honour of the legend when he clocked 80 about five years ago.
The drama has provoked issues bordering on morality and rights. Everyone has the right to express their opinions, but I have personally been shocked at the speed at which many of the commentators have poured refrigerated but hot bile on the icon. Refrigerated because the plane window scare or not, the customised bile has always been there for some folks. That is why despite the fact that the Tonye-Cole tale did not say Soyinka wrestled the seat with the guy, and even after the said man purportedly issued a statement stating the circumstance not as that of oppression at work, many of the social media laureates are still talking through all parts of their bodies. To some, it indeed seems as if they already have stored – in a vault – a stock of insults dedicated to the Nobel laureate, only always waiting for an opportunity to strike.
