The Secretary-General of Nigeria Customs Service Sports Unit, Samuel Onikeku, on Monday expressed commitment to discovering more beach volleyball talents to enable Nigeria to rule the sport in the future.

Onikeku made the disclosure on Monday ahead of the first edition of the beach volleyball open challenge scheduled to hold on June 8 and June 9, in Abuja.

He claimed that in spite of the laurels beach volleyball had won for Nigeria, it had yet to get the desired attention; hence, the decision to organise a competition to create awareness for the sport.

“I am organising a beach volleyball competition because I have a dream of discovering more players for Nigeria.

“It is an event that just needs two people in team which makes it less expensive.

“The beach volleyball team in Nigeria has been doing well at the world championships in the female category; so, the competition will bring more awareness and improvement for players,” he said.

Onikeku said that Nigeria could dominate the sport at the world stage in the nearest future.

“With more programmes of this nature and more support in terms of organising competitions, the standards of the game will improve,” he said.
