Relatives and friends of an ailing man, John Adefemi, were pleasantly surprised on Tuesday when a doctor simply recommended a bottle of coke for the man after complaining of near heart-attack.
Adefemi had suddenly developed an illness he could not really describe but insisted that he could be having ‘heart attack’ based on how he was feeling.
Uupon getting to a clinic in Arepo, Ogun State,however, he was subjected to a test.
He and those who took him to the hospital were very surprised when the doctor said, “Go and buy him a bottle of coke.”
The physician later explained that the patient’s sugar level was low.
Ordinarily, many people run away from sugary products but doctors also say that low sugar level is as dangerous as the high level of it.
Experts define the condition- low level sugar – called hypoglycemia as the condition that typically occurs as a side effect of medications for diabetes.
According to ‘medicine net’, the normal range of blood glucose is from 70 to 100 mg/dL in an individual without diabetes, It notes that most people will feel the effects and symptoms of low blood sugar when blood glucose levels are lower than 50 mg/dL.
Symptoms and signs include nervousness, dizziness, trembling, swathe.
The platform adds, “Despite advances in the treatment of diabetes, low blood sugar episodes occur as a side effect of many treatments for diabetes. In fact, these episodes are often the limiting factor in achieving optimal blood sugar control, because many medications that are effective in treating diabetes carry the risk of lowering the blood sugar level too much, causing symptoms. In large scale studies looking at tight control in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, low blood sugars occurred more often in the patients who were managed most intensively. This is important for patients and physicians to recognize, especially as the goal for treating patients with diabetes becomes tighter control of blood sugar”
