Our problem with people carrying dreadlocks, tattoos – Police

As outrage continues to greet the killing of a youth in Lagos by men of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, the police have given reasons why they usually question people with dreadlocks, especially youths.
The young man, Kolade Johnson, was killed on Sunday around a viewing centre where he had gone to watch football.
The SACS w team, from among whom shot Kolade, had made a move to arrest a youth with dreadlocks, who was seen in the vicinity in the Mangoro area of Lagos.
It was in the process of questioning and trying to arrest him that some people raised objection.
It was also in the process that Kolade was shot.
The outrage generated by the killing has been so pervasive that President Buhari has said that the killers will not go unpunished.
The two policemen involved have been arrested and paraded by the

command.
However, in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, the Lagos police command spokesperson, Bala Elkana, said people with tattoos and dreadlocks often attracted police attention because a good number of those who had been involved in crimes exuded same outlook.
He said, “Tattoo and deadlock are strange to our culture especially for Nigeria. Most times when you arrest cultists, many of them have signs on them’.”
