Former Manchester United player and current television pundit for BT Sport,Rio Ferdinand, is about to become the new sporting director of the Red Devils among the considered candidates for the job.
United executive Vice-chairman Ed Woodward has discussed the position with Ferdinand, and wants to finalise an appointment before the start of next season.
Woodward identified Ferdinand as a strong candidate who spent 12 years as a player at the club and has subsequent hbusiness experience.
The person who fills the newly-created sporting director role is expected to focus on the transfer market, the academy and supporting the management team.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher and current first-team coach Mike Phelan have also been linked with the job.
During his time as a player with United, Ferdinand made 455 appearances for the club, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League and two League Cups.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, appointed as United’s permanent manager last month, is also willing to work with a sporting director and has been involved in discussions.
