NYSC coordinator advises corps members to be self-reliant

Mr Adegoke Ayodele, the coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Cross River, has advised the members of the Batch A of 2018 corps members to be self-reliant after their service year.
Ayodele said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Calabar during the passing out of the batch.
He said the corps members were given a 10-day extensive Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme in the orientation camp and after they had left camp by the offices of the trainers.
“Corps members should use what they had learnt in the SAED programme to their personal advantage and not wait for white collar jobs.
“They should establish their own jobs and thus become employers of labour.
“Many of my corps members did well in the SAED programme and we will be given them SAED commendation letters,’’ he said.
The coordinator said that the passing out for the Batch A of 2018 was low key following a directive from the management of NYSC to all state coordinators nationwide.
He said that 1,617 corps members comprising: 817 males and 800 females successfully completed the programme in the state.
He added that four corps members would receive certificates of excellence; and eight would receive the State Coordinator’s commendation letter.
He said that 19 corps members would have their service year extended for various offences ranging from travelling without permission and refusal to attend Community Development Service (CDS).
Ayodele also thanked the corps members that worked as ad hoc staff with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the just concluded general elections in the state.
He said that the Cross River Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Frankland Briyai, had promised to pay those of them still owed before the end of the day.
Some of the corps members who spoke to NAN thanked God for protecting them in the last one year.
They said that they would use the experiences they gathered from the NYSC programme to better their future.
