A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 31-year-old motor boy, Emmanuel Nonso, to four months imprisonment for stealing a woman’s handbag at ABC Transport Park at Jibowu.
The chief magistrate, Mrs Oluwatoyin Oghere, sentenced Nonso after he had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of break-in and stealing.
Oghere, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000 as fine.
“The convict is hereby sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on each of the counts, but they should, however, run concurrently from the date the judgment was delivered,’’ she said.
The convict was arraigned on Nov. 13, 2018 and had admitted committing the offences and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, had told the court that the defendant was caught stealing the handbag from the complainant, Mrs Olamide Fatoye.
She said the park’s security guard, Mr Peter Abah, apprehended the defendant while he was trying to escape with the bag and alerted the police.
According to her, the handbag which was worth N2, 500 and contained two phones valued at N22, 500 and N27,000 -cash was recovered from the defendant.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 309 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). (NAN)
