Dr Chinwe Uzochukwu, a member of the Mothers’ union of the Church of Pentecost, Anglican Communion, Awka, has called on mothers to take seriously the responsibility of child upbringing.
Uzochukwu made the call during a Pre-Mothering Sunday visit to Gran Hermano Academy by the Christian Mothers of Church of Pentecost, Anglican Communion, on Friday in Awka.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Uzochukwu, who led the mothers on the visit, is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
She said that the visit was part of activities annually done by Christian mothers to re-awaken in the minds of mothers, the art of keeping and maintaining Christian homes.
Uzochukwu said that there was the need for mothers to always look inward in their various homes, with the aim of raising a stable home, where children are raised to have good character and be worthy citizens.
She said that the idea behind visits of mothers, as a group to various schools, hospitals, prisons, orphanages, during season of Mothering Sunday, was to establish the hidden love of mothers to people around them.
She urged the pupils and students of Gran Hermano Academy, to always listen to the instructions of their parents and teachers, so as to come out better citizens in life.
Mrs Chioma Nwachukwu, a banker, who was among the mothers that visited the school, said that she was excited to be part of the age-long tradition of mothers paying visits to schools, as was the pattern in her school days.
Nwachukwu said that the exercise was worth sustaining and encouraged mothers, especially young mothers to be on top of the children’s upbringing because with the computer age, children demanded special attention.
Similarly, Mrs Ijeoma Anakwe, a member of the mothers union, that joined the group for the visit, encouraged teachers to see themselves as mothers and partners in children’s development.
Mrs Cecilia Eresimadu, the Principal of the school, in her appreciation of the women’s visit, gave an assurance that the school would remain a citadel of learning and moral impartation in their pupils and students.
Eresimadu said that they annually looked forward to mothers’ visits during the pre -Mothering Sunday activities and urged the women to sustain this age-long tradition of the Christian mothers.
She said that the mothers, through the act of paying visits to various schools in preparations for the Mothering Sunday, left lasting positive memories in both minds of mothers, children and others.
Eresimadu said that mothers from various churches had been coming to celebrate the mothers’ love with the children, saying that it had become moments to look forward to with joy and prayed God to bless the mothers.
Miss Chidiogo Okere, a student of Senior Secondary School Class 2, spoke on behalf of the students in the school, welcoming the mothers and assured them of their adherence to instructions.
She promised that the students would be of good conduct and better citizens of the country in future.
According to Okere, we children are happy to see you and promised to be of good behaviour and become better citizens, as we will endeavour to remember all we were impacted in school.
Miss Angel Anyadiuba, a Basic 5 pupil, prayed for the mothers, asking God to keep them till their old age so as to be doing the good works mothers were associated with.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gran Hermano Academy School, has 300 pupils and students with 60 teachers and has been in operation for six years.
NAN also reports that the Anglican Christian mothers mark the Mothering Sunday every fourth Sunday in lent, which falls on March 3.
