Collapsed school building had been cracking since last year

Sorry tales continue to hover around the collapse of the building that collapsed on Lagos Island on Wednesday.
The Lagos State Government, which has been making frantic efforts to rescue victims trapped in the rubble, including 10s of pupils of a school housed there, has confirmed that as many as 18 people have died, with 41 surviving.
As of last night, some of the trapped occupants still managed to make phone calls, frantically urging their people to quicken rescue operations.
One of them is a teacher said to be trapped with 20 pupils, all on the ground floor of the collapsed facility.
While the school owner is said to have died, a claim by a former teacher may prompt the authorities to pursue serious issues of negligence as part of the causes of the ugly incident.
According to the former teacher identified by ‘The Nation’ as Bukola Salami,, the building had been cracking since last year:
“I worked in the school for six months and I resigned last December because the building was shaking. When I was in the school, I used to hear sounds as if someone was throwing stones from the walls. The building cracked and the walls shook at times. I told the school owner about my observations, I told her to relocate the school elsewhere, but she said there was no money for the school to be relocated. I resigned last year because of the fear that someday the building might collapse.”
