Celebrated comedian, Babatunde Omidina, popularly called Baba Suwe, has said that he still weeps over the death of lawyer and human rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, about five years after he passed on.
Baba Suwe, who is currently down with illness, recalled the efforts Aturu made to save him when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested him for alleged drug trafficking.
According to him, the energy and passion the lawyer invested in his case might have contributed to the condition that led to his death.
Baba Suwe noted this in an interview with popular broadcaster, Kola Olotu, where he gave details about his health condition.
He said the crisis started in the United States of America, where he had travelled to but collapsed even amidst cheers by fans.
All attempts to help him medically failed, as none was able to muster enough money for treatment.
“Since the time I returned to Nigeria, I have been going up and down,” he struggled to tell the broadcaster, who in turned struggled to keep tears out of the actor’s eyes. “They have taken me to different hospitals, yet my condition is getting worse. My situation is so bad now that I can’t walk without a walking stick.”
Baba Suwe linked his current predicament to the ordeals the NDLEA officials subjected him to while in its custody. According to him, the mental, psychological and medical stress they took him through, trying to establish that he harboured cocaine in his system, was terrible.
He lamented that he could not yet get the N25m damages initially awarded him, a point that further made him remember his late lawyer.
The most important issue, for him now, however, is the fund he needs to treat and rehabilitate himself as he has spent all he had on the health challenges. In an earlier interview, he had identified diabetic complications as being among the issues.
